Information Sheet – Duties and Responsibilities
MASKS ARE REQUIRED BY ALL MEMBERS
SKIPPER
Park outside the club gate. Arrive at appointed time and announce arrival to Gate Monitor. Be available when called to enter, obtain hardhat and proceed to make final preparations for launch. (Ensure all on board preparations for launch are completed prior to launch day) No items on cradle at launch time! Check in with Wrangler after leaving Gate area and announce if crash boat is required. Ensure minimum 50 foot single piece lines are attached bow and stern. (Longer is better at J-dock) Immediately pilot your boat from the launch slip to your assigned slip. You may remain on your boat as you wish. Return hard hats to return area in Clubhouse and leave the grounds. When possible, collapse cradle for storage ensuring that it is properly labeled as per bylaws. Cradle storage will occur on Sunday June 13.
NOTE: If your assigned slip is part of a launch well you may be asked to vacate until launch is complete. Check with Wrangler for instructions.
GATE MONITOR
Arrive at 0630. Record arrival times of members. When called upon by Wrangler or Assistant Foreman, direct skippers to enter property and distribute hard hats and HV vests. (Safety – yellow + HV vest; Foreman/Assistant Foreman -white + HV vest; Assigned Crews- blue; Slips, Launch & Haul Team- red) Monitor VHF14 at high volume.
FOREMAN
Address Launch Crew regarding your expectations prior to the shift including safety, hard hats, awareness of Crane Operator line of sight. Field questions from crew to confirm they know what is expected of them.
Communicate with the Crane Operator regarding crane set up. Follow the order of boat launch (Important!) and communicate with Assistant Foreman. Direct Crane Operator via hand signals for the lift.
ASSISTANT FOREMAN/2nd Safety Officer
Announce roll call to confirm all crew are present. Organize Alternates to sub for crew as required. (When someone needs a break, their boat is being launched or an extra crash boat is needed) Ensure boats clear the launch slip in a timely manner. Monitor VHF 14 at high volume and communicate with Crash Boat, Wrangler and Gate Monitor as needed. Enforce 2 meter/face mask compliance.
WRANGLER
Communicate with Assistant Foreman regarding launch sequence. Maintain communication with Gate Monitor to facilitate skipper’s entry ½ hour prior to anticipated launch time.) Direct skippers to alternative slips to keep launch wells free on C-dock and J-dock. (Information will be provided.)
SAFETY OFFICER
Monitor Hard Hat compliance. Enforce 2 meter/face mask compliance. Clear the lift area of non-essential persons. Ensure all boats in lift area, including boats already launched, are clear of crew. Take direction from Foreman to position yourself to observe the “blind side” of the boat and communicate with Foreman regarding sling hooks, lifelines and safety. Ensure Shepard’s hook and ring buoy are near the launch area.
If a safety issue is observed, speak with the Foreman.
Maintain eye contact with Foreman when possible.
If Mayday situation is observed sound one blast of air horn.
SLINGS/LINES (gloves are recommended)
Guide slings and hooks safely as they descend. Set slings at appropriate points as marked. LOOK UP. Ensure crane hooks are clear of topsides and lifelines. When tension is on slings, two crew will act as bow and stern line handlers. Keep the boat always aligned and control swing. Both lines are controlled from the same side of boat. Pay close attention to the direction given by the Crane Foreman. Two crew will proceed to the boat once launched, board the boat and when instructed by Foreman, unhook sling hooks.
LINE HANDLERS
Receive lines from bow and stern line handlers and control boat until it has left the slip.
ALTERNATES
Observe techniques of all crew positions. Be available to substitute for any Slings/Lines crew and crash boat crew, or as an assistant to the Wrangler. This may be to provide a break for crews or to fill in while crew launch their own boats. There is also an unmanned crash boat that you may be asked to crew if required. (Life jackets are on board)
CRASH BOAT (PFD required)
Be sure the VHF radio (channel 14) volume is at maximum.
Monitor all assigned docks, as necessary. Assist vessels as required. “Tow” vessels by lashing crash boat at side, aft of centre line with fore and aft control lines.
All CREW MEMBERS
Wear your mask. If cradles need to be moved all crew will help. If an issue is observed or you need a break, speak to the Assistant Foreman.
