North American 5.5M Regatta

Sailing enthusiasts will be treated to a special sight on Midland Bay this week as the North American 5.5M Regatta takes to the waters for four days of course racing.

What began in 2014 with four boats and a lot of enthusiasm, has built momentum, saving these former Olympic class boats from the scrap heap of history. Dozens of MBSC members have helped ensure the growth of the 5.5s through the years – participating as crew, skippers, race committee, on shore support and as boat owners.

Ten boats are due to race June 25-28 including Jill which was the Danish Olympic boat in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. Owner Jason Williams completely restored her to full racing form and her lovely lines will be up against a fleet of sailors from across Canada and the United States.

Outstanding esprit de corps and unique camaraderie continue to fuel the rejuvenation of the fleet and 15 different 5.5s have raced in Midland over the past decade.

While racing has been centred in Midland, the past two years have also seen a return to racing at the historic Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, expanding the fleet’s reach across North America.

The generous hospitality and cooperation of the Midland Bay Sailing Club and the support of Bay Port Yachting Centre, who expertly handle the launch and haul of these special boats, helps ensure the future of 5.5 racing.

If you miss this week’s event you have another opportunity to catch the action later this summer. The North American 5.5s will return to race again in the fall regatta running August 24-28 2026 at MBSC.

The 5.5M fleet has been a beautiful sight on Midland Bay since 2014 and the enthusiasm continues to grow with several new boats and owners getting onboard with the fun.

Nantoria’s long-time crew of skipper John Lister, Dave Harker, Bill Mills and Susan French finished the June 2025 5.5M regatta top of the fleet – and then in a surprise announcement Hugh Loughborough purchased Nantoria.

Summer School is jointly owned by Canadian Matt Thurley and American Joe Lambert and is a prime example of the unique esprit de corps that has helped rejuvenate the 5.5M fleet in North America.

Strawberry Moon Race & Cruise Returns to Georgian Bay

The Midland Bay Sailing Club is inviting sailors to take part in the Strawberry Moon Race & Cruise on Monday, June 29, 2026. This event is the second installment in the club’s new Full Moon Race & Cruise Series, which combines racing, cruising, and social gatherings under some of the most beautiful nights of the summer.

Participants can choose to race the course competitively or simply cruise the same route at their own pace. The goal is simple: get more boats on the water and create memorable evenings on Georgian Bay.

One unique feature of this event is a planned staggered start. Boats may be assigned different start times based on their characteristics and expected speed, with the goal of having everyone finish closer to the same time. By bringing the fleet together at the finish, organizers hope to create a more social atmosphere and encourage sailors to continue the evening together after the event.

Following the race, participants are invited to join an informal social gathering. Depending on weather and participation, this may take the form of a raft-up on the water or a gathering back at the clubhouse. Final plans will be discussed at the skippers’ meeting before the start.

Because start times will be based on registrations, early registration is strongly encouraged. The sooner boats register, the easier it is for organizers to develop start times that help bring the fleet together at the finish.

The evening begins with a skippers’ meeting at 7:00 PM, followed by the first starts beginning at 8:00 PM.

Whether you’re racing, cruising, or simply looking for a reason to spend a summer evening on Georgian Bay, the Strawberry Moon Race & Cruise offers a unique opportunity to sail, socialize, and enjoy the bay under a spectacular full moon.
